TAW Temporary Earth Retaining Method

The TAW(Tied Arch Wale) method is a new system for temporary earth retaining (sheathing) structures that supports excavation sides until excavating the ground and creating underground structures at civil engineering or architecture sites.

The TAW method is successfully commercialized for the first time by applying the arch structure and the arching effects to the temporary sheathing wale that resists external loads more effectively with the same cross section and the same weight of materials without any change in volume or mass.

Among temporary sheathing methods using supporting members called ‘Strut’, the most common method is the Strut method. The Strut method is relatively easy to construct and strut materials are easy to supply, but the spacing of struts is limited to be 2~3 meters. Therefore, it needs a lot of materials including struts, strut supports, and post-piles, etc. Besides, due to the narrow spacing of struts and post-piles, the space where workers and equipments can work and operate becomes narrow very insufficient. This makes work efficiency degraded and increases risks of safety accidents.

The TAW method can widen the spacing of struts to more than 9 meters and sharply reduce the volumes and workloads including struts, strut supports, post-piles, etc. by constructing with partial replacement from H-steel wale installed to the underground walls in the existing Strut method to TAW(Tied Arch Wale) with excellent stiffness and load carrying capacity.

The TAW method has benefits including shortening construction period by reduced sheathing workload as well as economic efficiency by reduced materials, and can reduce any potential civil complaints and safety accidents by reduced dust and CO2 emissions. Therefore, as a result, the TAW method can save direct and indirect construction costs.
